During the identity proofing phase of the PIV credentialing process, applicants must provide two forms of identity source documents in their original form. PIV Cards with expired dates or certificates will require a new card issue, as we cannot update expired certificates. ![]() ![]() For instance, if your card expires on April 01, 2024, then your certificate will expire on April 01, 2022. Typically, PIV Card certificates expire two years prior to the PIV Card expiration date. Additionally, there is a full expiration date located on the right-hand side of the card, to the right of the picture. If you are unsure of the expiration date on your card, you can find the PIV Card expiration month and year in the upper right-hand corner of the PIV Card. PIV Card services may be required if the PIV Cards are expired, lost, damaged, if their logistical access certificates have expired, or if the cards are locked due to a forgotten PIN Number. It contains the necessary data for the cardholder to be granted access to federal facilities and information systems and assure appropriate levels of security for all applicable federal applications. The Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Card is a common credentialing and standard background investigation process required by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12).
